Dear Lisa, this was fantastic. I’m in my 2nd year of a part-time Masters of Teaching (teaching not being my background) and still haven’t grasped the concept of lesson planning. I’m struggling with a 50% assignment which is all about lesson planning/programming for a 2-3 week period.

Gosh, Liana, I hope this meets the need!
I began developing units this way in response to the PoLT principle about stimulating deep thinking and connections by studying something over a number of lessons. In the library where I have the children for an hour once a week, the usual planning method – indeed the I did it myself when I first started in the library – was to plan a series of one-off lessons. They might have been linked together in some way e.g. a theme about animals, but lessons did not really build on and extend thinking about a particular concept. Now when I begin a lesson, I usually start with ‘Now, you remember how last week we ….’ and I spend some time revising the concept and cueing the children towards extending it. It’s a much better way of teaching.

    Hello Lisa
I have just stumbled upon your amazing site – thanks to the wonders of Google – and cannot believe that you are providing such a fabulous resource. We are from a tiny country town in Victoria and often feel that we are disdvantaged by not having a huge staff to develop curriculum units together. This year we are beginning to work on the Australian Curriculum and we are still a little overawed by it. This site is a terrific starting point and we hope to find more assistance as we begin to develop our own units of work.
I cannot belive your generosity – as an educator you are definitely a true teacher and leader.
    Thanks so much
    Anne

Thank you so much for your kind thoughts, Anne:)
Now, as it happens I also have a P-6 scope and sequence planner which sorts out the history and science topics over a 2 year odds/evens cycle.
Would you like me to email you a copy?
      Lisa
